The Canadian hockey players defeated the Americans in the final in Beijing on Thursday, winning their fifth gold medal in seven Olympic competitions since 1998. With this 3-2 victory, they also take their revenge after the loss suffered at the hands of those same Americans four years ago in Pyeongchang.
Canada took a 3-0 lead in the game with goals coming off the sticks of Sarah Nurse and captain Marie-Philip Poulin (twice). USA’s reply came from Hilary Knight late in the second period. The United States then closed the gap to one goal with a goal from Amanda Kessel with twelve seconds left late in the third period when Marie-Philip Poulin was in the penalty box and the Americans had their goaltender removed.
