(Ottawa) Canada recorded a merchandise trade surplus of $638 million in June, as exports of crude oil and gold increased sharply, Statistics Canada said.
Total exports increased 5.5% in June from May to $66.6 billion, as energy exports rose 11.7%, helped by a 13.3% increase in crude oil exports.
Exports of metal and non-metallic mineral products also increased by 11.8% in June, boosted by exports of raw gold.
Total imports increased 1.9% to $66.0 billion in June from the previous month, with imports of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts increasing 5.1%.
In terms of volume, exports increased by 3.8% in June and imports by 1.3%.
Statistics Canada says the trade deficit for May has been revised to $1.6 billion. The initial report released last month for May showed a deficit of $1.9 billion.
