Inuit singer-songwriter Elisapie Isaac will be immortalized on a stamp. Canada Post is paying tribute to the artist from Salluit, in the far north of Quebec, in a series of stamps issued on the occasion of National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21.
The one who makes a career under the simple name of Elisapie is also an actress, producer, director and activist for the promotion and survival of Inuit culture.
“Writing and singing in Inuktitut, English and French, she promotes Inuit language, memory and culture through her numerous artistic works,” mentions Canada Post in a press release.
Last March, Elisapie won the Juno for Indigenous Artist of the Year for Inuktituthis fourth solo album which covers classics of popular music in the native language.
The stamp was unveiled Thursday at the McCord Stewart Museum in the presence of Elisapie and her family.
It is part of a series launched in 2022 intended to highlight the contributions of Inuit, Métis and First Nations leaders who have dedicated their lives to preserving their culture and improving the quality of life of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Also honored by Canada Post were Métis visual artist Christi Belcourt and the late environmental activist Josephine Mandamin, an Anishinaabe elder who campaigned for access to health for the country’s indigenous communities.
