Campaign signage

A sign of the start of the electoral campaign, the signs set the tone for how a party wishes to make its place in the race, according to Julie-Anne Vien, associated with the National public relations firm.

If some wonder about the usefulness of these posters in the Quebec landscape, it would be above all the first means of communication of the parties, since advertising is not authorized during the first seven days of campaign.

“We are in a campaign of leaders, it is the leaders who have the majority of the spotlight and the light, so the sign becomes almost the only lever with door-to-door for local candidates to get to know, to have a little visibility, notoriety”, explained Ms. Vien in an interview Wednesday at LCN.

According to her, the display operation is also a key indicator that reveals the level of organization and preparation of each party.

The signs thus make it possible to convey messages by their simple rendering. As for those of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), the posters are, for example, no different from four years ago.

“It really felt like deja vu. At the same time, it is quite logical that we are in this perspective of not changing the brand image, since the CAQ sells continuity, ”analyzed Ms. Vien.

While most parties display the name of the candidate in bulk, Québec solidaire (SQ) has chosen to emphasize the first name, an element that is also revealing and quite unusual.

“We work on proximity, close to the world, then it’s no stranger to the way they run their campaign,” she said.

The Parti Québécois (PQ) has chosen to go with a “classic” and “fairly effective” display, but which can come “to create some confusion” because of its slogan “Vrai”, similar to that of the Party. Quebec Liberal (PLQ).

If the party of Dominique Anglade has for its part bet on the red, symbol of the party, and the slogan, the logo is not very present.

“The party logo is quite tiny, we wonder if it’s a deliberate choice, we know that the liberal brand is a little shaky these days,” said the expert.

Along with a few misprints that made people react on the first day of the campaign, these errors on the election posters would be an indicator of the rapid progress of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ) in the electoral landscape.

“It is missteps that we would like to avoid, at the same time it is revealing that we are in a young organization which is growing, it goes quickly so it sometimes leads to these errors”, argued Ms. Vien. .
