In Doubs, burglars are targeting the homes of deceased people, monitoring funeral notices. Eight victims have been reported in the space of two months.
In remote villages, houses are targeted by burglars with a very specific modus operandi. They break into homes whose occupants have just died. Like that of Jacqueline Gay’s mother, shortly after her burial: “What I saw when I arrived was that the patio door, which is usually closed, was ajar.”Inside, all the rooms and drawers were searched, such as in the bedroom where the jewelry boxes were emptied onto the bed.
In total, eight victims in the space of two months burgled within a radius of 30 kilometers. Did they use the death notices, such as the date and the village concerned? According to Cédric Nestor, commander of the Montbéliard gendarmerie company (Doubs), if in the death certificates “We mention the address of the deceased, this increases the possibilities, since many people can have access to this address.”
