To cope with soaring prices, Brussels adopted emergency measures on Friday 30 September. The 27 States members are called upon to reduce their monthly electricity consumption by 10%. The European Union is attacking above all the superprofits of the giants of the sector, in order to come to the aid of SMEs and individuals.

The price electricity weighs heavily in the accounts of a butcher, whose contract has just expired. His usual supplier offers him a rate nine times more expensive than last year. He played the competition, but his bill will still increase. Whether we had re-signed with Total, it would have been 275,000 euros. We signed with EDF, and it will cost us 225,000 euros“, he said.

In an attempt to limit the surge in electricity prices, the 27 agreed on the morning of Friday 30 September. Each Member State of the Union will be able to ask suppliers to pay them back everything they receive above 180 euros per MWh. The sum will then be redistributed to companies or individuals, for example by strengthening the tariff shield. Our proposals provide Member States with more than €140 billion to cushion the blow“, declared the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The provisional mechanism will be put in place on December 1, and will end on June 30, 2023.
