The Minister of the Interior declared on Thursday that he wanted to “use transit countries to return people who cannot be removed to their country of origin”.

Bruno Retailleau declared Thursday October 10 in Le Parisian that he wanted “use transit countries to send back people who cannot be removed to their country of origin”. The Minister of the Interior wants to deal with OQTF (obligations to leave French territory). Today, only 7% of these court decisions are actually implemented. The source of the blockage comes from the reluctance of countries to welcome these people back into their territory.

Bruno Retailleau proposes to enter into financial agreements with the countries through which the people targeted by these OQTFs transit, so that they can welcome them. A measure which is, however, not always feasible. The Interior Minister’s proposal is Italian-inspired, where the far-right Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, signed an agreement worth 650 million euros with Albania. The aim is for asylum requests to be processed before migrants even enter Italy.
