The Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau assured Tuesday October 8, during a press point at the National Assembly, that the “issue” unpaid rent from the national gendarmerie to many local authorities will be settled “as quickly as possible”. “I find a problem and I try to solve it, and as quickly as possible”, he said, ensuring that “everything will be back to normal” no later than “month of December”.

“The gendarmerie found itself short of cash for two main reasons: security measures which cost a lot of money for the Olympic Games and for the restoration of republican order in New Caledonia”first explained Bruno Retailleau. “In the year 2024, there were exceptional events. These elements consumed a lot of budget. There is no ill will on either side.”

“I would like to reassure everyone: the State’s commitments will be kept. The State’s word will be honored,” declared the minister, detailing the difference in treatment between small communities and larger ones: “There will be small landlords, who have cash flow problems, and in this case I have asked that payments be made very, very quickly.” “For the largest landlords, who already have cash flow, at that point, we will wait until December with the end of management law which will allow us to replenish the accounts and pay late rent.”

“More and more, the national gendarmerie is asking communities, communities of municipalities, urban areas, to finance barracks, and then there are rents”finished Bruno Retailleau.
