City councilor Claudio Benedetti considers it a “shame” to have a street called that and that this name tarnishes the reputation of the city.

“For the image of the City, for the credibility of the City, for the consistency of all our actions, of everything we do for Ukrainians, boots have to follow lips! “, launched Mr. Benedetti, during the meeting of the municipal council of April 19. “Let’s make a move and remove the name of Leningrad!” »

The adviser points out that “even the Russians withdrew it”, since the city of Leningrad regained its old name of Saint Petersburg in 1991.

Not the first request

In an interview, Mr. Benedetti adds that Lenin, to whom this name pays homage, is responsible for a great famine which struck Ukraine around 1920. It was at this time that many Ukrainians left their country to immigrate to Canada, he notes.

This is not the first time that the councilor has proposed this change, but he says his requests have always remained a dead letter with the municipal council.

Leningrad Street is in an area where all street names begin with the letter “L”.

“The reflection will certainly be done concerning the possibility of changing the name of the rue de Leningrad. I have mandated the toponymy committee to analyze it for recommendation to the members of the municipal council and the citizens of the street will be involved in the process, ”reacted Doreen Assaad, mayor of Brossard, in a response sent by email. .
