Open in early fall in Brossard, Café Kuya is already raking far beyond the South Shore. Thanks to a great visibility on social networks, but above all thanks to what is served there, in the cup as on the plate.
Located in a small shopping center on Boulevard Rome, the café not only serves coffees roasted in Montreal by Binocle and in Saint-Hubert by 94 Celsius, but also by Kapé, a Vancouver roaster who sources directly from the Philippines, the country of origin of the owners, Philip Peñalosa and Jean-Noël Quilatan.

“In Brossard, to have a restaurant with seats, you have to set up a kitchen,” explains Jean-Noël, who took time off from his job as a physical education teacher. “I was not sure at the start, it required more investment, but Phil likes to cook at home, it is a passion for him, so I told him go ! ”
Jean-Noël therefore takes care of the coffee – he became a barista in particular in contact with Sébastian Recinos, owner of Balam, Montreal coffee importer – while Phil serves some delicious Filipino specialties such as lechon sandwiches (pork rind sandwiches). seasoned) or siopao (steamed filled rolls). This is without counting on the incredible buko and maja blanca pies of Dre Mejia, a Filipino friend who until recently worked at Helena and who uses the coffee production areas to make his porky desserts, which he reserves as a primeur. in Kuya.
Dre also acts as a consultant for Phil and Jean-Noël, it is even said that he could become a partner in the adventure. The café should also become a dissemination space for Filipino culture – there are also already plans to open a few more branches. “We want to have time to do workshops, tastings, Filipino dinners, we want to be able to organize one-off events, exhibit artists of Filipino origin, we want to share our culture,” says Jean-Noël Quilatan. That promises!
