(London) British actor Bernard Hill, who played King Théoden in the trilogy of Lord of the Rings and the tragic Captain Smith in Titanicdied Sunday morning at the age of 79, announced his manager Lou Coulson.
He became known for playing the role of Yosser Hughes in the 1982 British miniseries Boys from the Blackstuff, recounting the wanderings of five unemployed people. This role allowed him a first BAFTA nomination.
He also played in Gothika, The Most Beautiful Victory And Valkyrie.
His death comes on the same day as the second season of the BBC drama series The Responder began to be broadcast. Bernard Hill plays the role of the star of the series, Martin Freeman.
“Bernard Hill has made his way to the screens. His long career has been marked by legendary and remarkable roles which are testament to his great talent,” said Lindsay Salt, director of drama programming at the BBC.
