The gift is given in honor of two close friends and advisers of the former Prime Minister of Canada. Thus, the money will make it possible to set up two scholarship programs in memory of Bernard A. Roy and Jean Bazin, who both studied at the Faculty of Law of Laval University alongside Brian Mulroney.
These scholarships will be awarded each year by Université Laval to deserving students who wish to pursue a career in law or politics.
In a written statement, Brian Mulroney explains that it is important for him to give back to his alma mater. He affirms that Université Laval gave him the necessary foundations for a highly rewarding national and international career.
For her part, the rector of Université Laval, Sophie D’Amours, writes that the institution is fortunate to be able to count on the support of an exceptional man and a great Quebec leader.
Bernard A. Roy, who died in 2013, was a great friend and Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney from 1984 to 1988. The Fund that will bear his name will allow students to develop their skills and leadership by participating to internships, competitions and practical training activities.
Jean Bazin, who died in 2019, was also a great friend and very close adviser to Prime Minister Mulroney, who appointed him to the Senate. The Jean Bazin Excellence Scholarship Fund for admission in law and international studies will make it possible to recruit the best students and train the next generation capable of meeting the challenges posed by the evolution of law and society.
