After attracting second-hand enthusiasts throughout the weekend, the sale closed its doors on Sunday, September 4, at the end of the day. As tradition dictates, the mussel shells consumed during the event have been gathered into a heap, which will then be processed to create items.
End clap Sunday September 4, at 6 p.m. The 2022 edition of the Lille (Nord) sale is over. Until the last moment, bargain hunters were looking for the latest bargains and also the latest mussels, the typical dish of the event. 500 tons of shellfish were consumed over the whole weekend. The tradition of the flea market is to gather the empty shells to make a heap. To clean up the city, 430 agents were mobilized all night.
Monday morning, Espérance Fenzy recovered around 4 tonnes of mussels to give them a second life. Example with those of the previous edition: “It’s mussel shell from the Lille 2019 vintage sale. It has been crushed, then we will sort and we will really refine the treatment.” The powder is then mixed with limestone beds and then with a binder, and finally, poured into moulds. It is transformed into tiles or a candle jar, objects with a very particular history. Limited editions that have a cost. Count for example 450 € for a basin made of shell.
