It took a lot of patience for fans of Borderlandslaunched by Gearbox Software and 2K Games in 2009, in order to see this video game, one of the main features of which is to slaughter hordes of monstrous creatures, brought to the screen. At the request of the producers, Tim Miller (Dead Pool) had to shoot new scenes, since director Eli Roth, who wrote the screenplay with Joe Crombie, was already booked on the set of the horror drama. Thanksgiving.
It is therefore with a three-year delay that Borderlands is released in theaters. Will fans of the genre be satisfied? Right from the start, they may be disappointed not to find two of the main characters of the game series, Brick and Mordecai. Have the producers already planned some sequels to include them? In the meantime, Lilith and Roland are there.
Native of the planet Pandora, which has nothing in common with the paradise planet of the same name in AvatarLilith (Cate Blanchett), a fearsome bounty hunter, must return to her home planet, which she calls the trash can of the galaxy, to find the daughter of the despicable and powerful Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). Against all odds, Lilith must team up with soldier Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), who has a penchant for explosives, muscleman Krieg (Florian Monteanu), neuroatypical scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and chatty robot Claptrap (voiced by Jack Black in the original version). Together, they will set out in search of a legendary ark.
Set in a universe evoking Mad Max and the planet Tatooine of Star Wars, Borderlands unimaginatively recycles various motifs and themes borrowed from the Fifth Elementto Raiders of the Lost Ark and to Guardians of the GalaxyPunctuated by action scenes carried out in a hasty manner, the whole thing is essentially based on the interactions of the members of this motley gang who enjoy insulting each other copiously between two monster attacks.
Cate Blanchett, who has a great time as a disillusioned old road warrior in this chaotic and thunderous universe, and Jamie Lee Curtis, who makes the most of a rickety score, easily stand out from the rest. However, this is too little to offer moviegoers and video game fans who are entitled to demand a more solid and captivating story than the one offered in this cartoonish post-apocalyptic western, which struggles to find its cruising speed and crashes heavily in the last act. Three years of waiting for that?
