Bobsleigh World Cup | Germany take both gold medals

(Lake Placid) Germany won both races on Saturday at the Bobsleigh World Cup.

Johannes Lochner scored a rare win over fellow countryman Francesco Friedrich in the men’s two-man bobsleigh and Laura Nolte held off American Kaillie Humphries in the women’s monobob.

Lochner and Georg Fleischhauer finished their two runs at Mount Van Hoevenberg in 1 minute and 51.88 seconds. They edged Friedrich and Alexander Schueller by 0.32 seconds.

The Swiss tandem of Michael Vogt and Sandro Michel finished in third position, 0.06 seconds from the second step of the podium.

It was the first loss in five World Cup races this season for Friedrich, the reigning Olympic champion in two-man and four-man bobsleigh.

The best Canadian pair was Taylor Austin and Gray Cyrus, who took the ninth place.

In the women’s monobob event, Nolte clocked two runs in 2:01.31 and beat Humphries — the reigning Olympic champion — by 0.11 seconds. Germany’s Lisa Buckwitz took third place, half a second behind Humphries.

Canadian Ribi Bianca had to settle for sixth place. The other representative of the Maple Leaf, Cynthia Appiah, took the provisional fourth place after the first run, but a poor second run dropped her to ninth place.

The World Cup weekend in Lake Placid wraps up Sunday with the women’s two-man and the men’s four-man.
