It’s the middle of the night, July 6, in Springfield, Illinois. Police officers arrive at the home of an African-American woman. The images from the intervention camera were released by the state police. As she searches for her identification, one of the officers orders her to turn off a pot of water boiling on the stove. “to prevent a fire”. “Drop the fucking pot”the police officer cried out, opening fire a few seconds later, shooting three times and killing Sonya Massey in her kitchen.
Days after her death, Sonya Massey’s family held a protest. The police officer was arrested and charged with five counts, including voluntary manslaughter. President Joe Biden responded Monday after the recording was released. “Sonya Massey, a mother, a friend, a daughter and a beloved young black woman, should be alive today”he laments in a press release.
