Finished the Black and White of Angers, Romain Thomas passes to the color, those of SM Caen. After nine seasons in Angers, the defender resumes this Saturday in Nîmes the championship with the Blue and Red.
“My choice was carefully considered. Today, I really changed. The first few days, it was a little weird: the change, getting out of your comfort zone, being a little bit alone for a few weeks. Today today the family arrived at training, so everything is as before” rejoices Romain Thomas.
The slender defender did not arrive in unknown territory in Caen. He joined in Normandy Ibrahim Cissé and Anthony Mandréa. Above all, he found a staff there that he knows well around Stéphane Moulin and who was already his in Angers until 2021.
Today, I really rocked. The first few days were a little weird
Romain Thomas was also quickly given the role of captain in preparation by the Norman coach. The defender corresponds to the definition that Stéphane Moulin has of the wearer of the armband, namely an exemplary and irreproachable player.
“When I say flawless, he’s not necessarily the best playerspecifies the Caen coach. The captain is a player who is very often on the pitch. It means that physically, it’s someone who holds the shock and it’s someone who is often in the same spirit as the staff. He is someone who sends the right messages to the locker room and who is able to federate around him. And also, he’s someone who has some experience.”
At 34, Romain Thomas has therefore signed up for three seasons, but without thinking that this may be his last challenge.
“I realize that indeed that would send me back to 37 years old but I have played against players who have gone much further than that too. I am passionate about football. I assume that as long as it there’s the desire and the physical follows, I don’t want to think about that because it’s a small end, a small death to say “oh it’s almost over”. No, no. I want bite into it and rip it all off just to try and have a great season.”
