Between 150 and 200 farmers gathered on Wednesday February 21 at the Lactalis headquarters in Laval (Mayenne), at the call of the Peasant Confederation. The union leaders asked to be received by Lactalis management. The CRS intervened at the start of the evening to evacuate the premises, according to information from France Bleu Mayenne, present on site. According to the police, there were no arrests.
Non-violent action
The farmers managed to enter the building but remained at reception. They came from Mayenne but also from Sarthe, Manche and Charente. Tractors were positioned around the site to block access and thus allow the entry of breeders and producers.
Slogans against Lactalis, the world number 1 in milk, were chanted: “To the peasants the sacrifices, to Lactalis the profits”, or : “Stop making money from our work.” The action, which took place smoothly, is described as “punch”by the Peasant Confederation which wanted to maintain the pressure, three days before the opening of the Agricultural Show.
The price of milk at the heart of the demands
Among the demands of these farmers, the purchase price of milk by Lactalis. The group notably owns the Président, Lactel and La Laitière brands. The Peasant Confederation no longer wants any transaction or contract between producers and manufacturers below the cost price for breeders. The union also denounces the inadequacies of the Egalim law or the lack of power of breeders in negotiations.
