Benny Gantz, member of the Israeli war cabinet, announced on Sunday June 9 his resignation from this body and from the expanded government created after the Hamas attacks on October 7. “We leave the unity government with heavy hearts”declared Benjamin Netanyahu’s rival, during a solemn speech on television.

Minister without portfolio within the framework of an enlarged government, Benny Gantz, leader of the National Union party (center), had expressed strong disagreements with his rival Benjamin Netanyahu. He had demanded from the leader of Likud, the major right-wing party, the adoption by the war cabinet of a “action plan” on the question of the post-war in the Gaza Strip, otherwise he would see himself “forced to resign from government”.

He initially issued an ultimatum to Benjamin Netanyahu on May 18, which was to end on Saturday. His press conference was postponed after the announcement of the release of four hostages. In the evening, Benjamin Netanyahu asked Benny Gantz not to resign. The time is “unity and not division”he said.
