Benjamin Bernheim, “Boulevard of the Italians”

Long-awaited release of the second recital by this French tenor, whose first disc arrived like a meteorite on the lyrical planet. In this second programme, Benjamin Bernheim performs airs by Italian composers in French. It is expected for Don Carlos, where the excellent Florian Sempey gives him the reply. less for Butterfly and Toscabut the works of the great Italians were presented in Paris in French in the 19and century, all of whom were also attracted to the French capital. The Palazzetto Bru Zane helped compose the program, where Bernheim’s voice is as flamboyant as ever. But we will be allowed this subjective critical touch: a small spark of magic has disappeared compared to the first disc. As if, in the latter, there was still a candor whereas there, Bernheim would be fully aware of his “value” and weighed the stakes, hence a certain tension, which appears from the air of entry of Pinkerton. Bernheim is more natural when he replies to Sempey in Verdi. Nothing is lost, of course.
