While in the Middle East, Israeli forces are further expanding their operations, the situation in Gaza has been at the heart of a mini-summit since this morning in Beijing. After facilitating reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran, China has been bringing together, since November 20 in Beijing, the foreign ministers of several Muslim and Arab countries, such as Jordan, Egypt and Indonesia, in addition to the Palestinian Authority and the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The Chinese regime therefore continues to display its ambitions as a peacemaker in the Middle East, with a demonstrated and assumed proximity to the Palestinians of Gaza. The head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi, declared that “China is a good friend and brother to Arab and Muslim countries”. Moreover, for the moment, he has never used the term terrorist to describe Hamas.
Beijing explained to its Muslim guests that the priority today was to act urgently to put an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, protect civilians and then fairly resolve the Palestinian question. A committed position which increasingly compromises China’s desire to play mediator in this crisis in the Middle East. Of course, Beijing also has good relations with Israel, but the Jewish state takes a very dim view of the openly pro-Palestinian Chinese position.
