Volkswagen favors Ontario to host its battery plant for electric vehicles, as reported The Press last month.
The German automaker, however, keeps a way out, stating that the project could see the light of day elsewhere in North America. This information is contained in recent registrations in the Ontario Lobbyists Registry made by consultants retained by Volkswagen. The Ford government has already offered to support the project through “investments” which have not been quantified. “There is no guarantee that after discussions […] that Ontario, or any other place in Canada will be awarded the project, “we warn.
This warning contrasts with the tone used by the multinational and the Federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, last December. Volkswagen then announced that it was looking to Canada to build its plant. The case seemed in the bag.
