The socialist’s retention in power is becoming clearer. The Basque nationalists of the PNV, as expected, gave their agreement on Friday, November 10, to the reappointment of outgoing Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The latter is now assured of having an absolute majority in Parliament.
This agreement with the Basque Nationalist Party, which has five deputies, comes the day after the announcement of the essential support of the seven deputies of the formation of the Catalan separatist Carles Puigdemont for the inauguration of the socialist for a new mandate. The date of the debate and the investiture vote must still be set by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, but it should a priori be held next week. With the support of the radical left, the Basque and Catalan parties and a small group from the Canaries, Pedro Sánchez, who came second in the legislative elections on July 23, will be able to count on 179 votes while the absolute majority is set at 176 votes in the House of Representatives.
Support for Catalan separatists causes controversy
The agreement between the socialists of the socialist leader and the formation of Carles Puigdemont causes a lively controversy in Spain. In exchange for the support of his party, the politician obtained an amnesty law for separatists pursued by the courts, in particular for their involvement in the attempted secession of Catalonia in 2017. The right-wing opposition, the extreme right and part of the judiciary are up in arms against this amnesty.
