Sunday, October 31, will be the official end of the ephemeral terraces in Paris and in several large cities. The exceptional measure had been extended to compensate for the months of closure of bars and restaurants linked to the crisis in Covid-19. Some establishments ask to be able to maintain their outdoor spaces.

Toasting on an ephemeral terrace will no longer be possible from Monday, November 1, to the regret of regulars. “It’s a little sad because it was very practical, especially to join friends, have a little beer after work”, comments a customer. In Paris, more than 12,500 outdoor terraces were created after the first deconfinement. For Gilles Tison, manager of the Parisian brasserie Le Saint-Honoré, his extra space outside allowed to limit losses. “It does all that in addition, a hundred people a day”, he believes.

From Monday, only terraces that already had permission to open before the Covid-19 crisis will be able to remain on the sidewalks. For residents, sometimes annoyed by the noise and the parking problem, this is a relief. However, these terraces will only disappear for a few months. More than 7,700 renewal requests have already been filed with the town hall. “These exceptional devices are mainly seasonal, we will see them reappear in Paris next spring”, says Olivia Polski, assistant to the town hall, in charge of trade.
