After a ceremony without an audience last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the BAFTAs were back this Sunday in London to celebrate British and international cinema with great fanfare. And even before the awards ceremony began, the show took place on the red carpet, where the stars paraded.
And the chic was out, especially for Lady Gaga, magnificent in a tight black dress signed Ralph Lauren. Adorned with a deep neckline, she had embellished it with a magnificent diamond necklace. With her carefully wavy hair, the 35-year-old actress and singer had an absolutely perfect look, she who impressed this year in the film House of Gucci.

The ceremony ended up crowning Jane Campion, best director for her very dark western The Power of The dog but also Will Smith in best actor for his role as father and trainer of the Williams sisters. Belfast won the role of best British film and it was Joanna Scanlan who walked away with the award for best actress. The ceremony was also historic because it was the first time that a deaf actor (Troy Kotsur, for CODAthe remake of The Aries Family) wins a prize.
Disappointment on the other hand Dunes, adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel by Denis Villeneuve, which did not win any of the most prestigious awards. The space opera had amassed eleven nominations (the record this year) and leaves London with five awards, notably for special effects, original music and cinematography.
Among the other prizes awarded, American actress Ariana Debose won the Bafta for Best Supporting Actress for West Side Storywhile Drive My Car, by Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi, won the prize for best foreign language film. Named in particular for the best film and the best direction, the teenage chronicle Licorice Pizzaby Paul Thomas Anderson walks away with the prize for best original screenplay.
The evening was also marked by the war in Ukraine. Rebel Wilson, presenter of the show, mentioned the conflict several times, even ending with a middle finger to Vladimir Putin. Some of his colleagues had chosen to wear a ribbon in the colors of the country at war, others criticized the fate reserved for refugees in Great Britain, in particular Andy Serkis, believing that the strategy of the Minister of the Interior, “‘all refugees are welcome but some are more welcome than others’ is total hell“.
