On the first day of the famous carnival, on Sunday, Piazza San Marco and the streets of Venice seemed to have returned to their normal appearance after two years marked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even though there is a bit of tension in the air, I can see that this year everyone wants to get back to normal and get back to the splendor of the good times,” said Carnival participant Marco Bozzolan.
“It’s the first day we’ve seen so many people,” confirmed Donatella Baldin, owner of a Venetian mask kiosk. For two years, since we (the kiosk owners) have not been recognized as workers, we have not seen a euro (of support from the government.”
