The Paris Court of Appeal confirmed on Thursday August 4 the conditional release of Patrick Balkany. The former mayor of Levallois-Perret (Hauts-de-Seine) is sentenced to five years in prison for laundering tax evasion.
On May 27, 2020, it was with a downcast face that Patrick Balkany left the courtroom. The Paris Court of Appeal has just condemned definitively the former mayor of Levallois-Perret (Hauts-de-Seine) to five years in prison for laundering tax evasion after years of legal battle. In 2013, justice began to take an interest in Patrick and Isabelle Balkany. She suspected the couple of having held large sums of money in Switzerland, but also of having undervalued some of their property, including a luxurious villa in Marrakech (Morocco).
The investigation was extended to corruption in 2014. A few months later, the spouses were indicted for passive corruption and money laundering of tax evasion. The amount of their fraud is then estimated at 13 million euros. On May 13, 2019, after years of investigation, the trial of the Balkany couple opens in Paris. Patrick and Isabelle Balkany are then condemned for all the facts with which they are accused. Patrick Balkany is immediately imprisoned in the prison of Health. During his incarceration, his state of health deteriorated, which led the Court of Appeal to order his release for the first time, at the beginning of 2020. Placed under electronic bracelet, he was placed under house arrest in his mansion in Giverny (Eure), but following numerous breaches of his obligations, the justice system decided, in February 2022, to send him back to prison. Incarcerated in Fleury-Mérogis (Essonne) since then, he will be released on Friday August 5.
