Fires in Greece: Residents return to their homes to see the damage

In Greece, firefighters can only rely on their work and courage to push back the fire raging near Athens. Since Monday, August 12, the worst fire of the year has been raging in the country. Many homes have been destroyed.

Swept away, what remains of a life. A home in Nea Penteli (Greece) was completely destroyed by fire on Monday, August 12. Just 48 hours ago, a neighborhood turned into a blaze. Some residents were evacuated at the last minute. The astonishment of the first residents to return to the scene has given way to bitterness. “It’s been happening for a long time and it’s not getting better.”says Andreas Velibasakis, a resident.

On Monday, a neighbor’s house was surrounded by flames. For hours, no firefighters intervened. “It was with this pipe and the shovel that we fought”he says. After begging for a fire truck to come, his house was spared. “There is not one person who came after the fire”he continues. It will probably take weeks or even months to rebuild everything in the neighborhood. Many residents hope to be supported by the Greek state.
