In Greece, beach spaces are shrinking due to the illegal installation of deckchairs by bars. New rules have been put in place by the authorities.
On a beach in central Macedonia (Greece), the waves arrive near deckchairs and parasols installed in the sand completely illegally. As the summers go by, locals and tourists see their swimming space shrink. To combat illegal privatization, the authorities have issued new rental rules: deckchairs must be at least four meters from the sea. The government has also created an application that allows you to indicate businesses that are not respecting the law.
In two months, around 6,000 reports have been sent to the authorities. For their part, bar managers, who argue that the administration responsible for issuing them with a permit is slow, find this unfair. “We are still waiting for the state to issue us the permit, but the tourist season has already started”argues Sofia Papagiannidou, manager of a beach bar.
