At least one dead, eight injured after roof collapses at New Delhi airport

Part of the roof of Terminal 1, the departures area, of the Indian capital airport, collapsed due to heavy rains. Other airport terminals are operating normally, as are arrivals at Terminal 1.

Drama in New Delhi. One person died and eight were injured in the partial collapse on Friday June 28 of the roof of a recently renovated terminal at the Indian capital’s airport, firefighters announced. “Rescue operations are over”said the city’s fire department director. “Due to heavy rain early this morning, part of the roof collapsed around 5am.”port authorities said in a statement.

The terminal, which is used only for domestic flights, is one of several projects inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March ahead of the general elections in the country. New Delhi has been hit by heavy rains in recent days as the monsoon has reached the Indian capital.

Vehicles were crushed by falling giant steel beams on the departures plaza of Terminal 1, according to images published online. “Emergency services are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.”authorities said. All flights departing from that terminal have been cancelled until early afternoon. Other terminals at the airport are operating normally, as are arrivals at Terminal 1. The terminal, which is used only for domestic flights, is one of several projects inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March ahead of the country’s general elections.
