An Israeli strike on a Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah left at least 45 dead and 250 injured. The UN calls for a transparent investigation.

On the night of Sunday May 26 to Monday May 27, screams and panic. Part of a camp for Palestinian displaced people in Rafah burned after bombings. Men, women and children were rescued from the chaos of the fire, from their makeshift shelters made of tents, wood and sheet metal. “We were praying, our children were sleeping. Suddenly we heard a loud noise, and fire all around”testifies a woman.

The Israeli army admitted having struck “a Hamas complex”, without giving further details. She claims that the strike was carried out “against legitimate targets under international law”. According to the Israeli army, the attack targeted two Hamas officials in the West Bank. At the hospital, the displaced mourn their dead. The Tal El Sultan camp, northwest of Rafah, had been designated by the Israeli army as a refuge. On Friday, the International Court of Justice called for the protection of civilians and an end to the fighting.
