At least 16 dead in Israeli raid on school sheltering displaced people, Palestinian authorities announce

The Hamas government’s Health Ministry said 50 people were also injured and transferred to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

A “heinous massacre”The Health Ministry of the Hamas government, which rules the Gaza Strip, announced Saturday, July 6 that 16 people had been killed in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Nusseirat, in the center of the Palestinian territory. The ministry specified that 50 people had also been injured and transferred to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Contacted by AFP, the Israeli army did not immediately comment on this information.

“There is absolutely no safe place in the Gaza Strip”reacted the spokesman for the Civil Defense, Mahmoud Bassal, assuring that the number of victims could increase after the strike on the al-Jaouni school. He denounced “A new massacre by the Israeli occupation that targets shelters and schools that shelter many citizens due to the destruction of homes across the Gaza Strip”According to the Hamas government press office, 7,000 displaced people were in the school.

Earlier Saturday, rescuers reported 10 deaths, including three local journalists, in an airstrike on a house in the Nusseirat camp. As the war in Gaza enters its 10th month on Sunday, diplomatic efforts have been renewed for a ceasefire.
