At least 12 people died in a clandestine boat attempting to cross the Channel on Tuesday, September 3. 51 migrants were saved, but some are in critical condition.
On the quayside of Le Portel (Pas-de-Calais), body bags were lined up on Tuesday, September 3. These are the bodies of migrants who drowned in the Channel while trying to reach England. On a stretcher, which rescuers are carefully hoisting, is another body. The list of victims is growing. At least twelve people are dead, mostly women, and two others are missing. 51 people were saved thanks to children, and thanks, in particular, to the intervention of fishermen.
The resigning Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, on the scene, once again pointed the finger at the responsibility of the smugglers. The boat in distress was spotted in the morning in the Boulogne-sur-mer region (Pas-de-Calais). This is the eighth shipwreck of the year in this sector increasingly invested by smugglers on the Channel coast. The passengers embarked despite rough seas.
