Astronomy: northern lights in the French sky
Astronomy: northern lights in the French sky – (France 2)
During the night of November 5 to 6, the Northern Lights were observed in the French sky. How to explain this phenomenon ?
At dusk, an aurora borealis in the sky of Arras (Pas-de-Calais)glowing under the Milky Way. Sunday November 5, near Calais, Cape Town White Nose was repainted mauve, then green. A magical and extremely rare phenomenon. “In the north of France, sometimes you can guess them, you can take a photo of them. But in the south of France, I really didn’t expect it“, assures Christophe Suarez who captured an aurora borealis in Fréjus (Alpes-Maritimes).
Intense solar activity
In the heart of the Alps, in Serre Chevalier (High mountains)these bright lights are the sign of a strong solar storm. Indeed, the more intense the activity, the further the auroras are visible from the North Pole. “The material ejected by the sun will arrive on earth. Interact with the earth’s magnetic field, which largely protects us, and the planet’s atmosphere. It will excite the atoms in the atmosphere (…) and form these magnificent colors“, explains Eric Lagadecastrophysicist. Colors vary depending on altitude.
