12:30 p.m. : Faced with the absence of drinking water or by consumption preference, 350 billion liters of bottled water are consumed each year in the world. The perception that bottled water is the healthier option is however undermined by a United Nations study, which warns of the presence of pollutants in certain bottled waters.
11:57 : hello FI and thank you for your daily work. When will there be a mandatory and systematic installation of rainwater recovery tanks for each new construction? We have made enormous progress in terms of thermal insulation (and therefore energy savings) despite significant additional costs imposed on people building their houses, but still nothing concerning water savings. In these times of drought, it would be high time to stop peeing in drinking water! (and wash your laundry, water plants and vegetable gardens, wash your car, etc.)
11:56 : So yes, for 3 years I have collected all the water from the roof (240m²), I stock it (40m3) and I use it for everything after filtering and UVC treatment (nothing chemical). Washing machine, shower, toilet and even meals*. I could be connected to city water but I made this choice and I don’t regret it…
11:56 : Since last August we (2 people) have abandoned the daily shower in favor of showering once or twice a week. And wash with a glove every day. The drought of summer 2022 made us think about this modest consumption.
11:55 a.m. : Earlier I asked you to tell us what measures you had implemented to save water. Here are some of your answers. Thank you all for your participation !
11:31 a.m. : Due to the lack of rain and the low level of groundwater in certain regions, drought could strike again in the summer of 2023, pushing the territories and their inhabitants to adapt at a forced march. On this World Water Day, I take the liberty of reviewing this February article on ways to adapt in France and this other text in which I address four received ideas on wastewater treatment.
11:09 : Adapt simple gestures, track down leaks… And you, has the fear of drought forced you to rethink your daily use of water? Do not hesitate to tell us about your experience in the comments!
11:11 a.m. : The average water consumption of a French person is 150 liters per day. We consumed 42 liters less in the 1980s. As a conference on water opens in New York and a UN report paints an alarming picture, franceinfo wondered how to gain in daily sobriety.
11:12 a.m. : Drought has many consequences, especially on homes. Some 50 million of them are threatened by what is called the “shrinkage-swelling” of clay soils. This morning, this question was discussed at length on the franceinfo set, with climatologist Françoise Vimeux in particular. Another subject discussed: the difficulty owners face when insurance companies refuse to cover work related to this phenomenon.
10:56 : We therefore direct our research around the understanding of pollutant transfer processes, the development of resource forecasting tools and the artificial recharge of aquifers.
10:55 : Managing #water sustainably, this will involve: ? the adoption of good practices to save water, by each of us, ? #science, to develop knowledge, monitoring and anticipation of the availability and quality of #Groundwater.
10:55 : #ClimateChange, increase in demand for different uses, #pollution,?All these factors make it necessary to implement strategies for the sustainable management and protection of groundwater, at different scales.
10:55 : Today is World Water Day ? And unfortunately it’s the right time to talk about it Because we are coming out of a relatively dry winter which did not allow the groundwater tables to be properly recharged . So focus on the threats to it https://t.co/sfrGSW7uBr
10:57 : Today we celebrate World Water Day. But while France (among others) is in the grip of a worrying drought, the national geological survey, the BRGM, warns of the threats to this resource.
10:13 a.m. : According to this new report by Swiss Re, the damage covered by insurers increased in 2022 by 3.3%, to 125 billion dollars, partly due to the effect of “exceptional inflation”, explained the director of disaster coverage, quoted in the group’s press release.
10:15 a.m. : In 2022, the economic losses caused by natural disasters amounted to 275 billion dollars, announces the reinsurer Swiss Re. This represents a drop of 5.8% compared to 303 billion in 2021, continues the group which underlines however that the costs have been increasing for 30 years at an average rate of 5 to 7% per year, and are likely to increase further with climate change.
10:32 : Everything, everything, everything, you will know everything about the latest IPCC report. Franceinfo receives in a chat at 4 p.m. Gerhard Krinner, director of research at the Institute of Environmental Geosciences (IGE) of the CNRS and author of the group of international experts on the climate. Commitments and actions judged “insufficient” to stop global warming, inequalities between the rich and the poor in the face of the disasters it causes, solutions that exist and reasons to believe in them… You can already ask him questions that we will put aside for you, in the comments.
08:54 : Is a complete exit from chemical pesticides possible? Can we do without it without running the risk of reducing agricultural production or putting European agriculture at a disadvantage? Yes, answers the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (Inrae) which draws up the scenario of an abandonment of chemical pesticides by 2050. Yesterday, the institute returned a study on the subject at a symposium organized in Paris and echoed by Le Monde.fr (article for subscribers).
08:22 : To the major problem raised by this report: the contamination of available water, due to the absence or deficiencies of sanitation systems. At least two billion people drink water contaminated with faeces, exposing them to cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Pollution caused by pharmaceuticals, chemicals, pesticides, microplastics or nanomaterials is also singled out.
08:22 : We were talking about it earlier, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, sounded the alarm on the risk of water shortage, just before the opening in New York of a United Nations conference on the ‘water. “If nothing is done, between 40 and 50% of the population will continue to lack access to sanitation services and around 20-25% to drinking water”, warns a report published on this occasion. Find our article.
07:26 : Is it hot or cold for the season? With an average temperature of 12°C, it is on average 3.6°C warmer than the reference average. Compare today’s weather to the temperature history of the last decades, thanks to our infographic which illustrates how global warming has already interfered in our daily lives.
08:40 : Good news is displayed in one of Alsace, which covers the improvement in air quality over the past ten years, reported by Atmo Grand Est. To qualify, however: ozone pollution has increased, stimulated by global warming.
08:32 : Fighting against greenwashing (also known as “green washing”) is no small feat for the European Commission. Of 150 green claims (packaging, advertising) examined by Brussels in 2020, half (53%) contained “vague, misleading or unsubstantiated information“: textiles, cosmetics, household appliances… In addition, the examination of 232 “eco-labels” Europeans showed that half were granted with verifications “weak or non-existent”.
06:24 : “Zero Carbon”, “made from recycled materials”, “reduced climate footprint”... The so-called “green” labels are everywhere. But how do you navigate between the real guarantees of quality and the misleading claims? The European Commission is today presenting its plan to eliminate the greenwashing of labels and advertisements. It provides penalties “deterrents” for companies making unfounded claims.
