as winter arrives, residents “can’t find jackets for their children”

Since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, residents of the Gaza Strip, particularly in Rafah, have been sleeping in the streets and lacking food and gas. This situation will get even worse with the arrival of winter.

In a short video, Kahled shows how the town of Rafah, in the very south of the Gaza Strip, went back a century. Cooking is done with wood, for lack of gas, there is no more salt and flour is overpriced. In the enclave, the situation is getting worse day by day for the population, which is mainly concentrated on two thirds of the territory with the forced evacuations of Gaza City. And the arrival of winter complicates everything, with bad weather having already started.

In Rafah, many people sleep on the streets. “There are no mattresses. They don’t have sheets. There are no blankets. There are no tents”, describes Kahled. This man worked in Gaza for the NGO Doctors of the World and now lives with his family and 30 people in a building without doors or windows. Despite everything, he was able to get his hands on warm blankets, distributed by the UN. I bought a good amount of blankets. I put them in my car.”he explains.

“I called my coworkers to see if they needed coverage.”

“I sold these blankets for the price I bought them”, he continues. Last year, at this time, Gaza was under floods. Winter is short but harsh in this part of the Middle East. The displaced are preparing for this and this can be seen in the clothing market, according to Kahled. “Little by little, the quantities are decreasing. My colleagues cannot find jackets for their children aged 2 to 16,” he laments. And as winter arrives, the displaced leave Gaza City with almost nothing and humanitarian trucks trickle in from Egypt.
