Arrest in Montreal of a man who allegedly defrauded nearly $600,000

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) reported Friday that it had arrested a Montreal man the day before who is suspected of having set up a fraudulent scheme that would have allowed him to extract nearly $600,000 from his victims.

Asim Ahmed, who is 42 years old, appeared in the Criminal Chamber on Thursday at the Montreal Courthouse, in connection with charges of fraud of more than $5,000.

The investigation into this man was launched in October 2022.

Investigators from the SQ Economic Crimes Investigation Division explain that the suspect’s stratagem consisted of approaching people by telling them that he had sued the Quebec government and the Financial Markets Authority (AMF) and that ‘he would have won his case.

However, according to police, he claimed to his potential victims that he needed money to pay the penalties and administrative fees required to recover the amounts he claimed to be the beneficiary of.
