Around 22,000 people marched on Saturday June 1 in Paris against the war between Israel and Hamas, according to the Paris police headquarters, against the incessant bombings in the Gaza Strip while the humanitarian situation is described as apocalyptic by the UN. This is the sixth gathering of this type since Monday and the images of the Israeli bombing of a humanitarian camp in Rafah.

In this very dense crowd which chanted slogans like “Israel assassin, Macron complicit!” there are a lot of young people. “It’s better to be in the rain than under the bombs, says Shevin, coming from Seine-et-Marne. They are our Palestinian brothers, and we will always defend them no matter what.” Sarah is also there to denounce “especially the injustice they suffer and because we are human and we don’t wish that on anyone.”

On Saturday, Hamas also published a new human toll: 36,379 dead since the start of the conflict. Among them, many children. It is for this reason in particular that Marwan came from Essonne with his whole family. “Our children see this on their cell phones, it’s really horrible. We can’t turn a blind eye to all this.”

The glimmer of hope can now come from the plan proposed by American President Joe Biden, supported by Emmanuel Macron, with a six-week ceasefire to begin with, and secondly, the release of all the hostages. A road map which leaves the demonstrators rather doubtful. “Israeli leaders would still have to accept it, warns Olivia Zémor, president of the EuroPalestine collective. The problem is that we have crazy power where the leaders know that, the day the war ends, they will be ejected from power.”

On Sunday, a barge in the colors of Palestine must sail up the Seine. On board, actors, artists and activists will hold up portraits of the victims of Gaza.
