“Are we calling for parental responsibility when the children of Nadine Morano or Éric Zemmour commit crimes?”, asked Stéphane Troussel, socialist president of the Seine-Saint-Denis departmental council, on Friday October 27 on franceinfo, after the announcements Thursday by Élisabeth Borne to local elected officials in response to the riots in June after the death of Nahel, killed during a police check in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine). The Prime Minister wants to incur the civil liability of both parents of the minor responsible for the damage to cover the damage.

Stéphane Troussel refers to the legal setbacks of the children of the elected official and the polemicist. Grégoire Morano, one of the sons of MEP Nadine Morano, was arrested in May for hit-and-run after a traffic accident and driving after using drugs. Eric Zemmour’s son was indicted in May for unintentional injuries after hitting a scooter while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Support for parenthood rather than “infantilizing injunctions”

“There is something that is a little shocking in these somewhat infantilizing injunctions with regard to parental responsibility”believes Stéphane Troussel. “This debate is perpetually relaunched when it comes to the children of the poor”, he insists. The local elected official prefers to defend “support for parenthood rather than these injunctions to parental responsibility when it once again concerns the children of the poor.”

After providing a security response on Thursday to the June riots, Elisabeth Borne is expected on the social field on Friday. She must chair an interministerial committee of the city in Chanteloup-les-Vignes in Yvelines. Stéphane Troussel expects something concrete: “I would have liked, we’ll see if it comes today, that there would have been announcements on the fight against dropping out of school. 90,000 kids leaving the education system without any diploma. What is the state today of justice and prevention in a certain number of our neighborhoods? Will there be announcements today, for example, to help recruit specialized educators? To strengthen the means of judicial protection of the youth ?”he listed.

The government announced Thursday the creation of a “republican action force” (FAR), made up of police officers, finance officials, educational and judicial personnel or social workers to “concentrate all the efforts of the State in a district (…) for several months”.
