Cosmetics: products in tablets, better for the environment?
Cosmetics: products in tablets, better for the environment?

The climate emergency is leading cosmetics manufacturers to offer new products. Have you already tried shampoo tablets in particular?

In tablets, in dissolving powder, made without water and without plastic or almost, cosmetics and detergents to dilute are arriving on our shelves and shaking up consumer habits. The refill of shower gel or toothpaste costs 2.50 euros for a brand, which is comparable to classic products, but the sale is in the form of a subscription. The pastilles are made in France, near Saint-Étienne (Loire). In the small factory, several powders of plant and synthetic origin are mixed. These cosmetics are plastic-free and less heavy in transport.

Pay attention to the ingredients

But you also have to look at the ingredients. “You have a whole production which goes from planting or wild harvesting with issues of deforestation and loss of biodiversity and a whole transformation. (…) It’s chemistry with energy consumption, machines, waste, water pollution“, summarizes Hélène Teulon, eco-design consultant at Gingko 21. She advises against palm oil and preservatives and recommends favoring organic products. The government is considering introducing environmental labeling on cosmetic products.
