In Vienne, residents fear violence as new demonstrations are planned against the megabasins on Friday, July 18.
In Saint-Sauvant (Vienne), the presence of law enforcement intensifies on Thursday morning, July 18. On Friday, thousands of anti-basin activists are meeting a few kilometers away. This banned demonstration worries a shopkeeper who will remain closed. “Given the conflicts that have occurred in Sainte-Soline, I don’t want to risk having everything broken.”explains Tony Lecomte, manager of the Village Grocery Store.
Like him, others mention Sainte-Soline (Deux-Sèvres). In March 2023, the construction of a water reservoir gave rise to violent clashes between radical activists and law enforcement. 20 km away, another rally against the mega-basins has been taking place in Melle (Deux-Sèvres) since Tuesday, July 16. The surroundings of the site are under high surveillance and local residents are being checked. Friday, July 19, the Rural Coordination is calling for a demonstration in front of the water village, in opposition to environmental activists.
