Federal Minister of National Defense Anita Anand announced that Canada will significantly strengthen its military presence in the India-Pacific region through Operation Horizon.
Mme Anand said Canada was committed to “fostering a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.”
The new operation will replace the current Canadian-led Operation Projection
It will include the annual deployment of an additional warship to the region, increased Canadian participation in international exercises, and strengthening relationships with regional partners through increased security cooperation.
Currently, two Royal Canadian Navy ships are deployed: HMCS Montreal and the auxiliary vessel, MV Asterix.
Anand says the new operation “will allow Canada to play an even more active role in contributing to regional security.”
