An investigation was opened by the Chambéry prosecutor’s office and entrusted to the gendarmerie after the death of a 12-year-old girl who drowned, France Bleu Isère and France Bleu Pays de Savoie reported on Sunday.

The accident took place on Sunday in the waters of Guiers, in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, on the border between Savoie and Isère. The young victim was sucked into whirlpools formed by the nearby hydroelectric plant.

Two teenagers managed to get by

She and three other teenagers in her family, aged 12 to 16, had gone swimming in the Guiers, on the Isère side, on the way to the shooting range. A bathing made dangerous by the presence near a hydroelectric plant, causing whirlpools.

Around 4:30 p.m., while whirlpools were forming, the three teenagers in the water tried to get out, but only two managed to take refuge on the rocks. The youngest daughter, aged 12, is sucked out. The firefighters were notified. Scuba divers explored the waters of the river and the pipelines of the power plant, supported by other aquatic rescuers on the surface. The lifeless body of the young girl was finally found by the firefighters in the water, on the Savoie side, around 8:15 p.m.
