An imam from Gard was sentenced Thursday April 11 on appeal to a one-year suspended prison sentence for advocating terrorism and provoking hatred against Jews, a heavier sentence than at first instance, reports France Bleu Gard Lozere.

This imam from Beaucaire was sentenced last November to an eight-month suspended prison sentence. The prosecution then appealed this judgment, considering this sentence too low.

Banned from practicing for one year

The Nîmes Court of Appeal sentenced him on Thursday to a one-year suspended prison sentence, a sentence accompanied by two years’ probation. During this period, this imam will be monitored by the sentence enforcement judge and must in particular inform the courts of any change of address and any travel abroad. He is also banned from exercising the function of imam for one year.

This imam, aged around thirty, was arrested at the beginning of November at Marignane airport as he returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia, reported France Bleu Gard Lozère. The man had made anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook, calling for the Jews to be fought, and advocating terrorism, in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas.
