An imam from Beaucaire (Gard) was sentenced Thursday, November 2 to eight months in prison for advocating terrorism and anti-Semitic remarks by the Nîmes criminal court. He was on trial Thursday morning in immediate court appearance, after being remanded in custody on Wednesday.

“The criminal court sentenced the defendant to eight months of criminal imprisonment with a simple suspended sentence, a ban on exercising the functions of imam and a penalty of ineligibility for a period of one year, as well as to his registration in the register of perpetrators of terrorist offenses”explains the Nîmes public prosecutor’s office.

This imam, aged around thirty, was arrested during the night from Monday to Tuesday at Marignane airport near Marseille, while he was returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia, according to France Bleu Gard Lozère . The man had made anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook, calling for the Jews to be fought, and advocating terrorism, in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas.
