Anne Hidalgo announced the lowering of the speed limit on the Paris ring road to 50 km/h. A measure that should improve air quality in the capital. Valérie Pécresse has expressed her opposition.
A brake on the Paris ring road. As of October 1st, the 70 km/h speed limit will be gone, it will be 50 and no more. This is the new weapon brandished by the Paris city hall to reduce pollution. But will this measure be effective? The city hall has not carried out any specific analyses, but some studies make the link between speed and pollution. However, according to studies, the pollution emitted by a car at 50 km/h is higher than at 70. The problem is that this study was not carried out on the Paris ring road.
For Pierre Pernot, Airparif engineer, speed is not the only criterion for reducing pollution and pollutant emissions: “Speed is not the main issue when it comes to air quality. What matters most is the number of vehicles passing, the type of vehicles passing and the flow.” The measure nevertheless helps to reduce noise pollution.
