An armed man tried to break into Windsor Castle

An armed man was arrested on Saturday after trying to break into Windsor Castle where Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating Christmas with her family.

Police said the intruder was carrying a weapon but did not enter any building on Saturday morning.

The suspect is taken into custody and members of the royal family have been informed, Thames Valley police told the British daily The Guardian.

A 19-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of trespassing or trespassing on a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon, they added.

Commissioner Rebecca Mears told the Guardian : “An investigation is underway following this incident and we are working with our colleagues from the metropolitan police. The man was arrested on suspicion of violating or trespassing on a protected site and in possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in detention for the moment ”.

“Members of the royal family have been made aware of the incident. We don’t think there is a greater danger to the public. “

The Queen celebrates Christmas in Windsor with Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, for the first year since the death of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.
