While several hundred foreign nationals have left Gaza for a week now, without a reliable figure being given by the Egyptian authorities, those who have not yet left the territory are resting in Cairo. If they consider themselves lucky, they remain deeply marked by this month of Israeli bombings on the Gaza Strip. This is the case of Hazem, an American-Palestinian who has just arrived in Cairo.

The father, 45, is sitting at the table of a café in a large hotel in Cairo. He cuddles his feverish two-year-old son. “My child has gotten sick several times due to water problems. You don’t have drinking water, you don’t have basic needs, there is no pharmacy. If someone has a fever, there is no medicine… So things will get worse,” he describes.

“There is no security”

American-Palestinian, he came to resettle in Gaza in September 2023 to be closer to his parents and ten brothers and sisters. A month and a half later, it was thanks to his American passport that he was able to go out with his wife and three children.

Today he finds himself faced with a dilemma: “Yes, I feel safe here. But knowing that you are leaving your family and friends in a place where there is no safety is difficult. A secure zone, this would mean that you do not drop any bombs in this zone“. Hazem lost all his savings in this war, but hopes to one day return to Gaza.
