An agreement was reached on Wednesday May 4 between the Socialists and La France insoumise with a view to the legislative elections. The National Council of the Socialist Party must now validate it.

The smile appeared on the faces of the executives of La France insoumise (LFI), Wednesday, May 4. The Insoumis managed to unite the main forces of the left, including the Socialist Party (PS), around a common program for the legislative elections. “We have a few weeks to (…) have, in five weeks, a People’s Union government in power”said Manuel Bompard, campaign director for the legislative elections for La France insoumise.

The Socialist Party agrees with the proposal of a minimum wage of 1,400 euros net, the right to retire at age 60 and the freezing of the prices of basic necessities. On the institutional side, the PS rallies the idea dear to Jean-Luc Mélenchon to establish the 6th Republic and the citizens’ initiative referendum. On the other hand, the discussions stumbled on their vision of Europe. Finally, the common text accepts the idea of disobeying or derogating from European rules, but the PS specifies that there is no objective of leaving the European Union, nor the euro. The standoff focused on the division of constituencies in mainland France: the PS snatched 70 of them. The former tenors of the PS did not hide their dissatisfaction: former Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve thus announced that he was leaving the party .
