At the end of the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, an agreement was reached to approve the transition towards the end of gas, oil and coal, Wednesday December 13.
After a final night of debate, an agreement was reached at COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). Wednesday, December 13, the president salutes a moment in history. “We must be proud of our historic success, the world needed to find a new path”, says Sutan Al Jaber, president of COP28. For the first time, the COP is discussing a transition towards the end of oil, gas and coal. This victory was expected for many countries, such as those of the European Union.
A text that is not binding
However, the agreement does not set an official release date. Fossil fuels are still the main source of greenhouse gas emissions on the planet. The text is not binding on the signatories, but some scientists are optimistic. “This is a very strong signal given to the markets and investors”greets François Gemenne, co-author of the sixth IPCC report.
